Published in the Proceedings of the Southwestern Anthropological Association (2016)

Abstract: The recent prediction by climate scientists that life as we know it may be nearing an end has generated numerous debates about causality of the Anthropocene and what happens next. As our industrialized societies begin to learn that we can no longer rely upon fossil fuels, we will either fall into chaos or begin to transition as responsible stewards of the planet to achieve a more sustainable future. Anthropologists are uniquely positioned to play a major role in helping our species to transition but one big question remains. Will anthropologists come out of the shadows and help lead the revolution; or will we remain a benign social science talking amongst ourselves? Can we seize this critical moment in our species' history, or is it already too late? As an unapologetic citizen anthropologist, I offer a holistic approach for engagement within our communities, by translating the science into intelligible models of cultural change through education, governance, and activism as we prepare our next generation of leaders for the greatest challenge of all.

Published in Landscape Ecology vol. 7 no. 2 pp 121-135 (1992).

Abstract: Native inhabitants of the Southeastern United States traditionally practiced land management strategies, including burning and clearing, that created ‘anthropogenic landscapes’. From the viewpoint of landscape ecology, analysis of historic documents including drawings and deerskin maps from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries depicted the Native Southeastern landscape as a series of circular patches surrounded by buffer areas. This character contrasted sharply with early European coastal settlements which were more typically rectangular in shape. Differences between Native American and European land use patterns and implied perceptions of the landscape reflect distinct differences in their respective cultural models and intentionality.

Full text can be found at https://www.academia.edu/7950099/Interregional_Patterns_of_Land_Use_and_Plant_Management_in_Native_North_America

Published in People, Plants and Landscapes (1997), edited by Kris Gremillion, pp. 195-216. University of Alabama Press, Tuscaloosa.

The landscape of North American archaeology has been dominated by regional perspectives, chronologies, and cultural and environmental reconstructions. Lack of interregional comparisons has hampered our understanding of pan-North American developments and events. By comparing land-use strategies across regional boundaries, several broad patterns emerge. They encompass basic structural dynamics of the land-scape, important economic plant families, and key interregional events marked temporally by the expansion of two exotic cultigens, corn (Zea mays ssp. mays) and beans (Phaseolus vulgaris). Of course there are various regionally and locally important plant resources not included in this survey, but my purpose is to focus attention upon broad patterns of plant use common to eastern and western North American landscapes.

The study region is defined as Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and northern Georgia. The time period of the study is set from first contact of the aboriginal inhabitants with Europeans until the early 1700s. Historical documents and journals are used to obtain information about how the native inhabitants of this region altered and managed their landscape to increase productivity of plants and animals, particularly those of interest as human food resources. It is argued that through the well-organized use of burning, clearing, and planting these Indians created and maintained a mosaic of managed patches that yielded high subsistence returns and ensured the short-term stability of their anthropogenic ecosystem.
